Corneal Refractive Therapy - A reshaping of the eye with contact lenses, also called Orthokeratology. These lenses are rigid and worn while you sleep, so they gently persuade the eye to change its shape by the time you wake in the morning. The effect lasts only a day or two, so you need to wear these lenses every night. It was approved by the FDA in June, 2002 and is a non-surgical way of temporarily creating the effect created permanently by LASIK surgery(

Dr. William Boothe =] Macular Degeneration - A deterioration of specialized cells in the macula of the retina which normally detect light and color to give us sharp central vision. With Macular Degeneration they deteriorate as we age, causing severe vision loss and even blindness after about age 65. There are two kinds:
Topography - (tuh-PAHG-ruh-fee) The contours of a surface; as in corneal topography, which can be recorded by a corneal topographer.

Lower Order Aberrations - The name for myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. These are the conditions measured to determine a prescription for glasses or contact lenses, and that can be corrected with refractive eye surgery such as LASIK. The higher order aberrations are more numerous and still be researched and some examples are: halos, glare, and double vision.
Contact Lens Assisted Pharmacologically Induced Kerato Steepening - A way to undo overcorrection in laser eye surgery (LASIK, PRK and RK). A tightly-fitting contact lens is placed on the eye and anti-inflammatory eyedrops are used. The goal is to make the cornea more steep, after it’s been made too flat.(

Patients are usually told to sleep much more and are also given a darkened pair of shields to protect their eyes from bright lights and protective goggles to prevent rubbing of the eyes when asleep and to reduce dry eyes. They also have to moisturize the eyes with preservative free tears and follow directions for prescription drops. Patients should be adequately informed by their surgeons of the importance of proper post-operative care to minimize the risk of post-surgical complicationsHigher-order aberrations are visual problems not captured in a traditional eye exam which tests only for acuteness of vision. Severe aberrations can effectively cause significant vision impairment.
Optometrist - (ahp-TAHM-uh-trist) A doctor of optometry (OD), which is not a medical degree. An optometrist diagnoses vision problems and eye diseases, and prescribes glasses, contact lenses, and drugs to treat disorders. They provide post-surgical care, but do not perform surgery. The education is at least three years and most optometrists have a B.A. or more. This is followed by four years at an optometry school, with an examination at the end. Some optometrists have further education and obtain M.A.s or Ph.D.s and can specialize in a variety of areas such as contact lenses, pediatric optometry, geriatric optometry and ocular disease.(

DR BOOTHE - DALLAS LASIK =] The fellow eye may be treated as early as (specify minimum time) after the first eye is treated. Stability of the treatment with the sponsor's laser should be established first in order to determine the appropriate time frame for performing fellow eye treatments. Fellow eye treatments should not be performed in the presence of any complications or adverse events in the initially-treated eye.
Many people have corneas which refract light either too much (causing it to focus in front of the retina and thus creating nearsightedness), or too little (causing it to focus behind the retina, causing farsightedness). Refractive surgery can correct this by reshaping the corneal surface to make it more or less steeply curved.

This clinical investigation should be designed as a controlled cohort study (name the kind of study, e.g., prospective, randomized/ non-randomized, one center /multicenter). This investigation should include a specific number of eyes and subjects and should be conducted at a specific a number of clinical investigational centers within the United States. Multi-center trials are not necessary in order to determine a reasonable assurance of safety and effectiveness of a sponsor's refractive surgery laser; single site studies may suffice if adequate data are provided to demonstrate that the device can be used safely and effectively by other practitioners. Sponsors who choose to conduct single site IDE studies of a singular laser device to support a PMA submission should follow the guidance provided in this document. This document applies equally to single and multi-center studies. Sponsors of single site IDE studies should identify and control biases and should obtain data from multiple investigators.

LASIK is a surgical procedure intended to reduce a person's dependency on glasses or contact lenses. The goal of this Web site is to provide objective information to the public about LASIK surgery. See other sections of this site to learn about what you should know before surgery, what will happen during the surgery, and what you should expect after surgery. There is a glossary of terms and a checklist of issues for you to consider, practices to follow, and questions to ask your doctor before undergoing LASIK surgeryLASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis and is a procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea, the clear covering of the front of the eye, using an excimer laser. A mechanical microkeratome (a blade device) or a laser keratome (a laser device) is used to cut a flap in the cornea. A hinge is left at one end of this flap. The flap is folded back revealing the stroma, the middlesection of the cornea. Pulses from a computer-controlled laser vaporize a portion of the stroma and the flap is replaced. There are other techniques and many new terms related to LASIK that you may hear aboutThe cornea is a part of the eye that helps focus light to create an image on the retina. It works in much the same way that the lens of a camera focuses light to create an image on film. The bending and focusing of light is also known as refraction. Usually the shape of the cornea and the eye are not perfect and the image on the retina is out-of-focus (blurred) or distorted. These imperfections in the focusing power of the eye are called refractive errors.

Myopia: Nearsightedness, a condition in which people can see near objects but have blurry distance vision. People who are nearsighted have a longer eye than normal, causing light rays to focus in front of the retina, instead of on it.
