A pioneer in the field of refractive surgery, Dr. William Boothe was one of the first cornea specialists to be trained in vision correction techniques during his Fellowship. In addition, he was the first cornea-trained surgeon in the Dallas area to use an FDA-approved Excimer laser for refractive surgery. Dr. Boothe was among the first three surgeons in the Dallas area (and one of the first in the country) to use a microkeratome, the instrument that creates the flap during the initial part of ALK and LASIK surgery. The delicate procedure of precisely lifting the flap is critical to overall success of the surgery.

Some eye diseases can have very serious complications. Dr. Boothe, one example is retinopathy which is a complication of diabetes which can compromise vision. If left on its own, it can cause permanent blindness.
Through laser surgery for eyes, leaky capillaries, swelling and any build-up of fluids can be removed. This helps on preserving and restoring normal eyesight for these patients.
Dr. Boothe, LASIK is an ambulatory procedure; you walk into the surgery center, have the procedure and walk out again. In fact, the actual surgery usually takes less than five minutes, and you're awake the whole time. Occasionally, the doctor will give a mild oral sedative beforehand. Even though the procedure is relatively quick, this does not minimize the importance of having it performed by a highly skilled surgeon with proper equipment because LASIK is a very delicate procedure. You also should have someone accompany you to drive you back home afterward.

The laser is programmed prior to each procedure for the ablative "cut" based on the patient's pre-operative refractive error (nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism). Once the laser ablation is completed, the surgeon gently replaces the corneal surface flap to restore surface integrity of the eye. It's as if the refraction is "ground in" to the middle layers of the cornea! The results are often dramatic and very rapid, with most patients seeing well enough to drive a car without correction the very next day. However, the best post-operative visual acuity may not be obtained until 2 to 3 weeks, or in some cases, even a few months, after the procedure.

A native Texan, Dr. William Boothe received his undergraduate degree from Rice University with honors and completed his residency at Texas Tech University School of Ophthalmology. Dr. William Boothe attended the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, before serving an internship at Presbyterian Hospital in Internal Medicine. Dr. Boothe completed a cornea fellowship at Jules Stein Eye Institute (University of California Los Angeles Medical School) where he specialized in refractive surgery.
Legal Blindness - A definition of blindness which enables a person to apply for government disability benefits. It can be either a visual acuity of 20/200 (or worse), with corrective lenses, in the better eye, or tunnel vision in the better eye of 20 degrees in diameter. Corneal Refractive Therapy - A reshaping of the eye with contact lenses, also called Orthokeratology. These lenses are rigid and worn while you sleep, so they gently persuade the eye to change its shape by the time you wake in the morning. The effect lasts only a day or two, so you need to wear these lenses every night. With Macular Degeneration they deteriorate as we age, causing severe vision loss and even blindness after about age 65. There are two kinds:

Lower Order Aberrations - The name for myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. These are the conditions measured to determine a prescription for glasses or contact lenses, and that can be corrected with refractive eye surgery such as LASIK. The higher order aberrations are more numerous and still be researched and some examples are: halos, glare, and double vision.

Contact Lens Assisted Pharmacologically Induced Kerato Steepening - A way to undo overcorrection in laser eye surgery (LASIK, PRK and RK). A tightly-fitting contact lens is placed on the eye and anti-inflammatory eyedrops are used. Patients are usually told to sleep much more and are also given a darkened pair of shields to protect their eyes from bright lights and protective goggles to prevent rubbing of the eyes when asleep and to reduce dry eyes. They also have to moisturize the eyes with preservative free tears and follow directions for prescription drops. Patients should be adequately informed by their surgeons of the importance of proper post-operative care to minimize the risk of post-surgical complicationsHigher-order aberrations are visual problems not captured in a traditional eye exam which tests only for acuteness of vision. Severe aberrations can effectively cause significant vision impairment.

Optometrist - (ahp-TAHM-uh-trist) A doctor of optometry (OD), which is not a medical degree. An optometrist diagnoses vision problems and eye diseases, and prescribes glasses, contact lenses, and drugs to treat disorders. They provide post-surgical care, but do not perform surgery. The education is at least three years and most optometrists have a B.A. or more. This is followed by four years at an optometry school, with an examination at the end. Stability of the treatment with the sponsor's laser should be established first in order to determine the appropriate time frame for performing fellow eye treatments. Fellow eye treatments should not be performed in the presence of any complications or adverse events in the initially-treated eye.

Many people have corneas which refract light either too much (causing it to focus in front of the retina and thus creating nearsightedness), or too little (causing it to focus behind the retina, causing farsightedness). This clinical investigation should be designed as a controlled cohort study (name the kind of study, e.g., prospective, randomized/ non-randomized, one center /multicenter).
